On naming a brand after a plant.

The name came before the brand did. SMOKEWEAR. I said it out loud and it stuck. It is direct. It is honest. It is a little provocative. And that last part is the point.

Cannabis has carried shame for decades. Not the kind of shame that comes from something being genuinely harmful. The kind that gets manufactured. The kind that gets attached to a thing because of who was associated with it, not because of what it actually is. The history here is not subtle. A plant that grows in almost any climate, that produces fibre, food, and medicine, became a symbol of something dangerous because it was convenient for it to be dangerous. That is not science. That is politics.

We are past that now. Or at least we should be. Hemp is legal across the EU. CBD is in pharmacies. The research has been published, reviewed, and largely settled. But the cultural residue is still there. People still lower their voice when they say the word. Brands still dance around it. They say plant-based or natural fibre because those phrases are safe. They do not make anyone uncomfortable.

I wanted to be honest. The material in our shirts comes from the cannabis plant. Not the part that gets you high. The part that makes one of the strongest natural fibres on earth. There is no THC. There is no grey area. But there is a plant, and that plant has a name, and I think we should be able to say it without whispering.

There is something else happening too. People are more conscious now about what goes into the things they put on their bodies. Not just food. Everything. Fabric. Dye. Treatment. They read labels. They ask questions. And they deserve real answers, not marketing language designed to sound good without saying anything. SMOKEWEAR is a real answer. It tells you exactly what you are wearing and why.

I think about value a lot. Not price. Value. The difference between what something costs and what it is actually worth. A sixty euro t-shirt that falls apart in six months has terrible value. A seventy euro t-shirt that improves over twenty years has extraordinary value. But you can only see that if you stop thinking about purchases as transactions and start thinking about them as decisions. What you wear says something about what you think. Not what you want people to think. What you actually think.

There is a parallel with the plant itself. Cannabis grows. It adapts. It gets stronger in difficult conditions. That is not a metaphor I planned. It is just true. The fibre gets more durable with use. The brand gets more honest as it grows. The person wearing it gets more comfortable with their own choices. Growth is not always loud. Sometimes it is just a quiet decision to stop pretending.

I could have called it something safe. Something Scandinavian-sounding with clean vowels and no associations. Something that would slide into a market without anyone having to think about it. But that would have been a lie. And lies are exhausting. For the person telling them and the person buying them.

The name is just honest. That is all it is. That is all it needs to be.
